In one year of renovation and construction, the newest extensionof the garden was opened to the public on October 1st, 2009. As an extension ofthe Bamboo Garden,this 23 acres of new garden is also bamboo themed. It has two rockworks on thenorth and the south, and houses in the middle of bamboo bushes. 

Bamboo and rocks are also common motifs in ancient brushpaintings. Bamboo is not only a frequent subject in painting of ancient times,it was also one of the main themes in poetry and literature. The most famouspoet Dongpo Su once wrote: People can eat no meat, but cannot reside withoutbamboo. No meat only makes a person lean, but no bamboo will make a personvulgar.

Dongpo Su was actually a big meat eater. He invented a wayof cooking pork,  which is called DongpoMeat. The dish is still popular in lots of restaurants in Hangzhou. 

This house in the middle of the bamboo is called Residencewith Bamboo. The house is semiopen to all sides, so people can enjoy the viewsof the bamboo bushes. The surrounding features include water, two pavilions on eitherside, and verandas connecting to each other. The house becomes the center ofthe Southeast quarter. There is classical Chinese furniture displayed inside. Dohave a rest here if you like and move on when you are ready.
